Common questions from people donating motorcycles to Salute Veterans Inc.
Cruisers, sport bikes, touring rigs, adventure bikes, dual-sport, dirt bikes, café racers, choppers, scooters, mopeds, trikes, and three-wheelers — from every major manufacturer. American, Japanese, European, vintage, modern. If you have a bike with a title, the conversation usually ends with us accepting it.
Project bikes are common donations. Bikes mid-restoration, bikes torn down to the frame, bikes missing parts — most of these are still worth donating. The key is having a clear title in hand. If you can answer "yes, I have the title and the bike is at this address," we can almost always make it work.
Lost titles are extremely common for motorcycles. Bikes change hands more often than cars, and paperwork tends to wander. Most state DMVs can issue a duplicate motorcycle title for a small fee. Before starting that process, call us — depending on your state's rules and your bike's history, we may have a faster route.
In most states, the title document itself is similar, but the requirements around it can differ — some states require notarized signatures for motorcycle title transfers, others have specific motorcycle-only registration rules, and some have separate motorcycle title divisions at the DMV. We handle these on a regular basis. Tell us your state and we'll walk you through the specifics.
For most bikes, pickup is scheduled within two to five business days of your first call. Remote locations may take a few extra days while we coordinate transport. We give you a real timeline when we confirm, not a vague window.
Your deduction is generally the amount the bike sells for at auction. If the sale price exceeds $500, you'll receive IRS Form 1098-C documenting the exact figure. For bikes that sell below that, the IRS rules differ slightly — your tax preparer can confirm what applies.
The receipt is mailed within 45 days of the bike selling at auction. Most donors receive their paperwork six to eight weeks after the original pickup.
After the standard costs — towing, transport, auction fees, processing — are covered, the remaining proceeds go to Salute Veterans Inc. Those funds support veteran employment programs, transition assistance, and the free resources we run for the veteran community. Our 501(c)(3) financials are available on request.
